Miniature, Byron Levy

How to paint miniature paintings on small canvas

Materials: Very tiny brushes, acrylic or oil paints, and 4 miniature canvases (approximately 2½" x 2½"). Paper, pencils, and brushes for practice. Small canvases are available at Co-Op Bookstore for $2.15 each, small stands are also available for $2.15 each.

First Day: How to paint miniatures paintings

Second Day: Painting miniatures. Bring photographs, pictures, or sketches for your subject matter.

Biography

Byron Levy

Byron Levy has painted watercolors in New Orleans for the past 50 years. He studied watercolor with many of the leading watercolorists in the United States including Dong Kingman, Bob Wood, Edgar Whitney, Terry Madden, Milford Zornes and many others. He has also participated in workshops and courses at Tulane University, Newcomb College, and the University of New Orleans.

He has accumulated over 150 sketchbooks which record his various activities and travels. Pages from his World War II sketchbook appeared in The Times Picayune in 1995. A six page illustrated article appeared in the 2000 summer issue of Watercolor, an American Artist Magazine, showing Byron Levy's sketches and explaining techniques of workshops.

Byron Levy is an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society, a member of the N.O. Lettering Arts Association, and the N.O. Art Association. He is also a member of the Louisiana Art and Artists' Guild, LSU Lagniappe, and a LSU Print Shop student.

Mr. Levy created posters for the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, WYES Public TV and a commemorative plate for the New Orleans Parkway and Park Commission. He has had several one man exhibitions of jazz paintings and has paintings in many private collections. He taught courses in watercolor at Forstall Art Supply on Harrison Avenue in New Orleans for ten years before moving to St. James Retirement Center in Baton Rouge where he teaches watercolor as a volunteer. He was featured on "LA The State We're In", a channel 27 educational TV show, as a Hurricane Katrina artist.
