General Info
Exhibits at Independence Park Theater
- Take-in / Pick-up days are always on a Thursday from 10:30 am - 1 pm at Independence Park Theater. Works are to be picked up promptly as storage space is limited.
- Receptions are always held on a Sunday from 2 - 4 p.m.
- The hanging fee for judged shows is $8 per painting for LAAG members and $10 per painting for non members. The hanging fee for members only shows is $5 per painting.
- All shows require original work (see Originality Rules) which is not based on published photographs, or done as class work or in workshops. Copies of other artists' work are not eligible for entry into a judged show.
- Only works created in the past 2 years can be entered in Guild exhibits.
- The same painting can only be shown in one judged show and one members only show.
- Works sold are subject to a 20% BREC commission fee.
- Neither BREC, nor the Guild, is liable for damage, loss or theft.
- All works are required to remain hanging until the end of the show.
- Only members of the Hanging Committee and the Gallery Coordinator are authorized to hang, move, or remove paintings.
Exhibits at other locations
- Paintings must be dropped off at the Studio in the Park (2490 Silverest Ave) on a Wednesday (10 am - 4pm) or a Sunday (1 pm - 4 pm) prior to the exhibit hanging date.
- When the paintings at an exhibit are changed out, they are brought back to the Studio in the Park and can be picked up there on a Wednesday or Sunday.
- These exhibiting opportunities are free and only available to LAAG members.
- Paintings displayed in these exhibits do not have to be original (i.e. works can be done in a workshop, or can be copies of a master's work.) Any such instance must be documented.
- Paintings displayed in these exhibits can be older than two years.
Hanging Rules and Regulations
- Make certain your work is clearly identified on the back as to title, medium, frame size, price (or Not For Sale) and most importantly, include your name, address and phone number.
- We do not accept unframed works, unless they are of the wrap-around, so called "gallery" canvas type - i.e., no tacks, staples, etc., visible on the sides. The sides of a gallery wrapped canvas must be painted.
- Frames should be simple and non ornate - black, white, gold, silver, wood, etc. Maximum frame width is 3 inches.
- Maximum size, frame included, is 48 inches in either direction.
- Mats should be white, off white or a light-colored neutral tone. A thin, colored liner is acceptable.
- The hanging method requires a screw eye and wire setup. Screw eyes are to be placed one third (of the vertical measure of the frame) down from the top corners of the frame. The wire, when held at the center, should be 2 inches from the top of the painting.

View larger image- If the existing wire/screw eyes hanging system approximates that measure, no additional modification is required.
- Metal frames with clips and wire are suitable, if clips are firmly seated (no slippage) at the required distance from the top.
- The protective layer of glass, or Plexiglas if over 18"x24", should be clean, properly sized, fitted for its frame and firmly seated.
- All work should be firmly fastened in the frame with sufficient backing and/or tacking to eliminate any looseness.
- Check frames, tighten screws, reinforce corners, etc as needed.
- Clean/dust the frame and/or glass before turn-in. And please, no wet paint.
Originality Rules
It is a basic and long-standing goal of the Louisiana Art and Artists' Guild that only original artwork be displayed in the Guild Exhibits. To help define the term "original artwork", the following guidelines have been adopted by the Board of Directors.
- The work must be an original composition in both execution and design.
- The work may not be a reproduction of an original from any medium even if it is a limited edition signed by the artist and registered. Prints or Gicles are not permitted. For printed works to be considered original, the work must be a graphic work for which the artist himself etched or engraved the original plate, cut the block or worked on the stone or screen.
- A work may not be a direct copy of a published or unpublished composition, i.e. postcards, photographs in books or other publications, other photographs not taken by (or expressively for) the artist, or the work of other artists. Photographs taken by the artist but processed by commercial photo labs will be accepted as original sources. Collages or mixed media work may employ photographs in an original composition by the artist.
- Work initiated in a workshop or performed in response to a "take-home" assignment may be considered original, provided the artist has interpreted the subject matter in an individual way and rendered the work without direct assistance from another artist or instructor. Originality is usually not compromised by an artist's attempt to respond to minor critiques and suggestions offered by fellow artists or instructors.
